What is Your Sundog Story?
Been with Sundog since June 2018 – I’ve been an admirer of Sundog and their work with WordPress for several years. Then a few years ago at my previous job we pulled Sundog on board in a support role for our website. The whole team was so great to work with. So when I decided to make a job change, I went on the search and low and behold Sundog was looking for a new web designer. I reached out to Kym, met with her and Joe and now I’m a Sundog!
What is Your Alaska Story?
I was born in Napa, California (49er Faithful), but I was raised in Vancouver, Washington (nope, not a Seahawks fan). I was living on 5 acres in a neighborhood with people I dearly loved, married to the man I love, and raising my two kiddos when my husband’s job decided to see if he would be interested in moving to Alaska. Funny thing… about 2 years prior I had a friend move to Alaska, and I told her she was a better woman than I was because I would NEVER let my husband move me to Alaska! Ha! I know better than to challenge God’s sense of humor.
We decided we were up for the adventure and made the move! We have thoroughly enjoyed Alaska and it is our home. The best part is that we have been able to see very clearly some of the reasons God moved us here and how He has used Alaska, its people, our church and the Grace Christian School community we are a part of to shape and mold the spiritual lives of our children. Alaska has been a blessing in our lives!
What Do You Do For Fun?
We have a family lake cabin and that is our happy place. We enjoy the quiet times there, but most of all the time with friends. We have several good friends on the lake with us and it’s like another little family. So many great talks and bursts of laughter around the campfire! My personal favorite thing to do on the lake is go out in my kayak. Especially when the waters are calm and the sun is setting. It’s perfection! The only thing better than the cabin is going away on vacations with my husband. We also try and go fishing a couple times a year, and I love catching fish with my grandpa’s old fly rod.
I can often be found cheering on the Grace Grizzlies as my son competes in sports! It’s fun watching your kids use their gifts and talents to be a part of something bigger than themselves.
I’m also a wanna-be realtor who loves when I have a friend looking for a house. I LOVE looking at real estate and have actually found “the house” for a few friends.
I want to think that hiking is fun, and I have a few friends who are working with me on my fear of heights and bears… Basically they drag me out there from time to time. But time with friends is always fun!
How Did You Get Into This Gig?
When I was in high school my mom’s best friend was the computer teacher at a local school. The summer after my freshman year she brought an Apple computer to my house and told me to play with it for the summer. It had Adobe PageMaker on it and I just started experimenting. It’s sort of crazy to think back on what I used to do with what would now be considered such a limited program. Over the years I just kept dabbling in all of the Adobe products and have taught myself everything I know when it comes to design.
About twelve years ago I was a stay-at-home mom blogging like all the other moms. Blogspot was all the rage! I had always been interested in web design, so I decided to take a quick class at the community college. In four two-hour classes I learned enough about HTML and CSS to realize that I could alter the look of my Blogspot and personalize it to my own style with graphics and images. Then I did it for a few friends too. Next thing I know friend of a friend emailed me and offered to pay me to do it for them. From that moment on… I always had a waiting list and my design business was born. I soon transitioned to WordPress and spent some time as a featured designer for Genesis.
In the last several years I took a break from my business and served as the Marketing and Communications Coordinator at Grace Christian School. This gave me an opportunity to further develop my Adobe skills, crossing over into video editing as well. It also gave me huge opportunity to hone both my marketing and communication skills through various platforms like web, social media, video, presentations and more.
Now, I’m returning to web design, which is probably what I would consider my “first design love,” and I couldn’t be happier!
Where Do You Get Your Inspiration?
In my work life I’m completely inspired when I see the brilliant work of others. It pushes me to be better at what I do. In my personal life, I’m inspired by my Savior Jesus Christ and the sacrificial example of servanthood that He is. My husband inspires me with his hard work and determination, my daughter inspires me with her love of missions and people, and my son inspires me with his unwavering love of family.
